1. Examine Your feet daily:
Diabetic patient has an essential requirement to examine their feet daily, as due to neuropathy, your pain sensation is muffled. If you develop blister or corn, this will lead to ulcer formation, if you do not see it regularly.
2. Washing/ Cleaning
Wash your feet in lukewarm water with soap. Do not use hot water or harsh soaps.
3. Dry your feet
Keep your feet dry, including spaces between your toes. ,by patting with towel after washing.
4. Moisturize dry skin
Dry skin leads to cracking of skin, which promote infection and ulcer formation. Apply lotion, oil, or petroleum jelly to keep it moist. Do not moisturize spaces between the toes.
5. General Instructions
Avoid walking bare foot, even on carpets, rugs, etc.
Do not expose your feet to extreme of temperatures.
Never attempt to remove corn, calluses, warts or other lesions by yourself. Always contact your doctor/ podiatrist.
Do not sit with your legs crossed or stand in one position for a long time.
6. Toenail Care:
Trim your toenails when your nails are soft, after washing your feet.
Cut straight across, not in curved fashion
Smooth the edges by emery board.
7. Footwear
Shoes must be well fitting, comfortable. Toes must not be squeezed or pressed.
Wear shoes made of leather, canvas or suede. Toe box must be wide.
These should have, laces, buckles, or Velcro, to adjust the fitting.
Look inside of your shoes before wearing, for tears bumps etc.
Wear cotton socks for extra protection.
